SJM is a ceramist based in New York City. For more than 15 years she has primarily practiced wheel-thrown pottery.
Never intending to sell her wares, her commitment to the practice is driven by the complex multistage process of the art-form: concept, design, throwing, trimming, and glazing.
Generally unsatisfied with her work, most pieces are discarded during throwing. Those that reach actualization as functional objects have historically been given away or stored. With encouragement from friends and fellow potters, SJM recently acquiesced to make her works publicly available.
As a career Creative Director working collaboratively in photography, film, digital, and print landscapes, ceramics gives her a design practice that is entirely her own. Her work is characterized by unique glazing applied to her proportional forms that result in a satisfyingly balanced object.
Each piece holds powerful space in the environment it is placed in.
Simplicity in all things.
